What is a Sales Development Representative
A sales development representative is a salesperson whose job it is to generate leads with prospects. An SDR may do sales prospecting activities such as cold email, LinkedIn, and cold calling. The whole goal of the SDR is to schedule meetings for account executives. Sales development reps are also the same as business development reps. Companies can use both terms interchangeably.
Do You Need Any Prior Experience To Start as a Sales Development Representative
Suppose you are graduating college or looking to make a career switch. In that case, the good news is that you don’t need any prior experience to become an SDR. It doesn’t matter what you majored in at college or what kind of jobs you’ve done in the past. Some skills you will need to have or be willing to learn is people skills, soft skills, emotional intelligence, basic writing skills, and the ability to talk on the phone. As long as you have general people skills, you can learn all these skills on the job.
How Much Does a Sales Development Rep Make?
A sales development rep can make an annual salary from $40,000 to $70,000. SDRs also get paid commission and bonuses based on hitting quota. Most good SDR roles get paid an OTE (on-target earnings), your base salary combined with your commission if you hit 100% of your quota.
How To Find Sales Development Rep Jobs
To find a sales development job, you can look on job boards like Angel, where startups post-sales jobs regularly. Some startups are willing to give equity as a new sales hire. You can also find sales development and business development jobs on LinkedIn. Additionally, suppose there’s a company you really like. In that case, you can go directly on their career page to see if they have any SDR job openings.
